“I'll find out who did this to you,” I whisper. “I'll make them pay. I promise.” I whisper into her ear. I take her hand.
She was the most beautiful girl at the Blue Room, once. The most requested of them all, until the day some piece of scum attacked her and left her for dead. The living daylights were all but gone when I found her. And it's haunted me ever since – who would do that to her. Out of the girls at the Blue Room, she was the one I respected most. Smart, beautiful, eloquent, kind, cheery. She didn't belong at the Blue Room. I always knew that. She could have a career of her own, marry a man as wealthy and as powerful as any of the patrons at the Blue Room; hell, she could have been a patron. But she never let on what she was doing there. Whenever I asked her she'd just smile and say, “it's what I need to do.”
She was the only one there who treated me like a person. Not like a pimp or a meal ticket, not just Clarence Blue's bastard son, not a patron, but a person. I won't deny it, she had a killer body, and the first time I met her I was attracted to her, but the more we talked, the more she seemed to transcend attraction. She was so smart, so kind. I liked talking to her about everything; even the most mundane stuff. My family. Women. The way I can't go more than a day without sex, without going crazy. She was a good listener. Gave good advice.
“Sex is about two people,” she always said. “Not just one. With you – sex is all about you. That's the problem. Not that you're having too much or too little. Just that you can't really see the people you're having sex with.”
Then came the day I found her in one of the special rooms. The rooms without camera. The rooms where men can do anything they want – to anyone. And never, ever, get caught. Secrecy was always prized in the Blue Room. And I took pride in providing it. Until the day my friend's attacker went unknown because of it.
No appointment made, no trace of a client.
Head injuries, broken limbs, an eye almost out of her socket. Surgery did something to save her life, but the scars remained. The brain injuries. She had no next of kin that I knew. I had no way of finding them if she did. She had memory loss and speech problems – she could barely talk, last I saw her.
All I knew was her first name.
Rita.
“So, Rita,” I don't even know how much she understands me. “Looks like I'm out of the Blue Room, now, too. But that doesn't mean I can't still check up on what's going on. What happened to you – I won't let it happen again. I swear I'll try my best to find out what's going on, and stop whoever is doing this from ever hurting anyone again.”
I tell her everything. Even now, it feels like I can talk to her.
“There's a new girl there who seems smarter than the rest. She reminds me of you – but...” The words come out. “I'm crazy about her. But I'm scared for her. Without me to protect her. At first she was bait – I wanted to lure your attacker out again – but then I fell for her. And now I'm terrified I've put her in danger. I don't want anything to happen to her – and I worry all the time. I need to find my way in again – even if I have to do it as a patron. Just to keep Staci safe.”
Rita rears up wildly. Her eyes are terrible, panicked.
“What is it, Rita?” I ask her. “Something I said.”
She waves her hand. She's trying to speak – to say something.
“What?”
“St...” She's shaking. It takes all her energy. “Sta...”
“Staci?”
She wails again.
I know what that means, yes.
“You know Staci?”
The look in her eyes is unmistakable.
“My...” She can barely get out the words. “Best....friend....”
Staci? Rita's best friend.
Well, shit.
No wonder a virgin was so set to get inside the Blue Room. Insisting on seeing “Mr. X.” To find her best friend – vanished into the night. And all this time, I could have told her...
I kiss Rita on the forehead.
“Thank you, Rita. You've saved me more than you know. All this time...” I squeeze her hand. “I think I know how to keep Staci safe.”
